Prisoners of the Island Karimunjawa

How do you feel, if you only have a little contact with the outside world?

How do you feel, if all access to get something that you desire just being cut?

How do you feel, if once in your life, you think about how to break the prison?

How do you feel, if once in your life, you look at the sky and wonder  about another world?

There are no walls around the island, but there are 6 meters waves on the sea. And here we are, trap inside.  No access to get out, no access to get in, and no access to get what I’m craving for. We are in the prison. Island prisoners of Karimunjawa.

It´s been a week since the sea patrol announced a warning that no boats may across the sea. Around 150 tourist, who had new year vacation, trapped on the island. Last Monday, Express Bahari speed boat insisted to go back to the mainland, although it was wavy and windy. Almost all the tourist luckily went back home, few of them are still here.

What is happening here now? People call the season like this as Baratan/Angin barat. It´s a west wind season. The winds blows wildly from the west. It could cause 6 meters wave (hope not higher than that). It could cause some trees falling down. And the worst it could cause no more food delivery to the island.

You are wrong, If you think that all day we need to stay in the house because of hard wind and rain. Today´s weather is sunny 31,8° and my husband just sunbathing in the garden. The sun is still shining, but the wind is going crazy. However we can´t play with the weather. A sunny day could turn into a stormy day within a second.

Even Karimunjawa is about 6 hours away (with ferry) from the main island Java, no chance to get food delivery!! That´s a normal life for every island prisoners. So this supposed to be our normal life too.

Today when I look at the wavy ocean, I just wonder, if I still live in the big city would I still be thankful for all the easy access and for all the food that I could easily get?? This season teach me to be more grateful for just every little thing.

Hello World

It is hard to live in this modern live without internet connection. It is so sad to see “No Network” on the phone. Something incomplete!!

In this rainy-no tourist season, the villagers of Kemujan Island have a problem to make contact to the outside world. Because we can not catch the phone signal from the private island resort and somehow (almost a month now) it is down.

Maybe it is not a big deal for the most villagers. Not all of them have special antenna to catch the signal or even they don´t have a cell phone, and not to forget that years a go they could not catch any signal at all.

At first it was depressive for us, because we used daily internet connection to just chat with our family, having contact with our up coming guest, to read what happen in the world or just to browse something unimportant (killing time :-)).

If we want to do something with internet or call our family on the main land, we need to drive 15 km with motorcycle, over the hills and very very bad road (I think you can not imagine). In Karimunjawa main village there are two towers from more than one provider. Still the signal from Karimunjawa village can not get through the mountain which is just in between of Karimunjawa and Kemujan Island.

Friends and family start to complain that they can not reach us. My Mom said, “Where do you actually live? On Mars?” I just laughed, Mom I think even on Mars they have Phone connection but not on our Island NOW!!

Well, let’s hope that soon we can contact the world again. Now put away all the gadget, take a paper and a pen. Meanwhile let me start to write a letter again, a real letter on a paper. Just like every people once did.

Craving for Ice cream and Chicken

It’s almost a month since we moved to Karimunjawa, and we are deadly craving for Ice cream and meats like beef and chicken. It doesn’t mean that we are lacking of food and starving, don’t worry we are still eating properly everyday. The big problem of living on the island Karimunjawa is the food (vegetables, meats, etc) delivery. It only comes with KMP Muria (big ferry) from Jepara. That’s why usually restaurant, hotel and warung storage their food for a week or two. For us, in order to buy fresh vegetables and meat (chicken), we go to the local market a day after Muria coming (tuesday, thursday and sunday). Mind that local market open only from 4:00 am until 7:00 am.

This week Muria couldn’t come on last monday because of bad weather!!! It was really a bad news for us. We had to wait until next Muria coming again to the island. Yesterday we heard that Muria came. Yipppiiiii, we were happy. Chicken, we are coming!!

This morning we wake up early at 5:00 am and went to the market. René speeded up the bike along 13 km. We arrived just before 6 there. And there were chicken chaos!!!! Rini couldn’t find chicken on the market anymore. All sold out!!!! Think that we already came as early as possible, and it’s still to late. We are totally disappointed. But life goes on, also without meat as main food. We have to live with it.

Ice cream is another problem. As you might know that the weather on the island is hotter than on the land. At noon the outside temperatur is about 30 degrees or even more. Usually after luch, we wish to have ice cream as dessert. Then we will joke each other, that one of us should go to the store and buy ice cream. Which of course impossible!! No stores here have freezer to keep the ice freeze, because as you might also know, electricity run starting from 6:00 pm until 6:00 am. It means on a day no electric. How could the freezer keep on?

It’s a little bit weird, because usually on tourism island, we can find ice shop. Who’s not craving for ice on the hot day after sunbathing or snorkling! This is a big chance for every investor. Let us tell you, that our island (we) need urgent ice shop. Would be better an Italian gelato ice shop, that sell straciatella, malaga and lemon flavour. A small ice shop with coulourful umbrellas facing to the sea. Lovely!!! Hhhmmmm…. we will be definetly become your loyal costumer ever. And we bet that your ice shop will be full of tourist everyday. So, think about it! Who dare to open ice shop here in Karimunjawa??

Tough we are craving for those both things, still this is the new life that we choose and we have to survive, with or without ice cream and meat (chicken).
